Psalm 148: Nature's Rap

Psalm 148: Nature's Rap

Psalm 148: what a beautiful vision of creation!

Spiritual beings sing God’s praise. Sun, moon, and clouds sing. So do animals and plants. Along with people of all ages, genders, and social classes.

Why? Because God created them. God loves them. And God praises them, too.

Psalm 148: what a great way to start the day!

That’s why Psalm 148 is part of daily morning prayer in Judaism. Our morning prayers are upbeat. We wake up affirming light, love, and freedom. Each new day brings new hope. Why not start by singing out our ideals?

Why not sing Psalm 148 with passion? Why not chant it? Why not rap it? The 47 translators who created the King James Version of the Bible thought we should!

Here’s a Psalm 148 rap, adapted from the KJV translation. Take a quick listen to the cadence. Then, read aloud below with the rhythm in mind. Or should I say with rhythm in hand? Hand-clapping, that is!

Psalm 148 Rap

Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD// Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD.

Praise ye the LORD from the heavens// praise God in the heights.

Praise ye God, all the angels// praise ye God, all the hosts.

Praise ye God, sun and moon// praise God, all ye stars of light.

Praise God, ye heavens of heavens// and ye waters that be above the heavens.

Let them praise the name of the LORD// for God commanded, and they were created.

Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD// Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD.

God fixed them for ever// a decree that shall not pass.

Praise the Lord from the earth// ye dragons and all ye deeps.

Fire and hail, snow and air// stormy wind fulfilling God’s word.

Mountains and hills, fruitful trees// and all cedars sing praise.

Beasts and cattle, creeping things//flying and migrating fowl.

Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD// Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD.

Kings and Queens, people of earth// princes, judges, and simple folk.

All young men, all young women//elders, children, and friends.

Let them praise the name of the Lord//the only excellent name.

Glory above, glory below//earth and heaven and water.

God exalts us, praises our deeds//loves the world and its people.

Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD// Praise ye the LORD, Praise ye the LORD.
