Prophetic Vision: Jeremiah’s Urgent Wisdom for Our World (Workshop)
January 14, 2019 @ 8:15 pm - 9:30 pm MST
“My people has exchanged its glory for what can do no good” (Jeremiah 2:11b). So Jeremiah discerns with his prophetic vision. Through Jeremiah’s eyes, we see these words truly describe our world today, too.
How does Jeremiah discern his truth? What exactly is prophetic vision? Centuries of Jewish tradition offer multiple answers: Correct prediction of the future (Devarim). Clear perception of the Divine (Rambam). Sympathy with God’s moral heart (Heschel). Seeing patterns (Gillman). Witnessing terrible events (Piacetzner). And more.
Together, we’ll review different understandings of prophecy. We will apply and test them as we study short, varied passages from Jeremiah. Finally, we’ll discuss prophecy in our times. What sort of prophecy is available? What is needed? How are prophetic insight, ethics, spirituality and action connected? What can each of us offer?
