Healing Christian Antisemitism: Revisiting the New Testament
A joint presentation by Rev. Dr. Jason Byassee, Dr. Harry O. Maier, and Rabbi Dr. Laura Duhan-Kaplan.
In the wake of the holocaust, many Christian theologians took a hard look at their complicity. For centuries, Christian texts, beginning with the New Testament, had vilified Jews. So, Christians began to read their Bible differently, teaching positive views of Judaism. But today Christian antisemitism re-appears in both white supremacist and post-colonial thought. What are its Biblical roots? How can Jews and Christians respond to this legacy together? In this session, co-led by Jewish and Christian scholars, we will study two problematic New Testament texts. We will look at their original context, history of interpretation, and influence today.
